Oh my goodness! Unless you are a Tree of Life developer, you really shouldn't be here. This page is part of our beta test site, where we develop new features for the ToL, often messing up a thing or two in the process. Please visit the official version of this page, which is available here.

  3. Funnel
    1. Funnel component of the funnel/mantle locking-apparatus with a deep, curved groove.

  5. Pigmentation and irridescence
    1. Irridescent tissue absent from ventral surface of funnel.
    2. Funnel chromatophores form a solid anteroventral patch that extends to the dorsal surface of the funnel tip.
    3. Head with clear patch of tissue ventral to eye and just anterior to attachment of lateral funnel adductor muscle but not extending to edge of secondary eyelid.

Figure. Ventral view of the opened mantle cavity of H. hawaiiensis, female. Note deep depression at the anterior end of the mantle component of the funnel/mantle locking apparatus (arrows) which suggests that the mantle component can strongly lock over the anterior end of the funnel component. Note also the visceral photophore, the nidamental glands and the oviducal opening. Photograph by R. Young.
