Josia subcuneifera
James S. Miller and Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
This rare species, known from only three specimens from Ecuador and Peru, was formerly considered a geographical race/subspecies of J. aurifusa or J. turgida. However, Miller (2009) has shown that the male genitalia exhibit substantial differences from males of either of those species and considers it distinct.Characteristics
J. subcuneifera may be distinguished from other members of the aurifusa group by its genitalia, and by the narrow blackish band around the posterior margin of the hindwing, and by its slightly larger size (Miller 2009). The color difference between the illustrated specimen and those of other members of the group is probably due to its age (120 years old).References
