Introduction

The Copobaeninae consist of a single genus with only four known species distributed in South America. Anthicids of this subfamily are characteristized by the metallic blue shine of their elytra and contrasting pale pronotum. The newest species key was presented by Abdullah (1969).

Characteristics

The main characters of the Copobaeninae are: Frontoclypeal suture present. Neck is broad, about 1/2 of maximum head width. Mandibles large, bidentate at apex. Pronotum with thin and fine anterior rim. Antebasal sulcus complete. Mesosternum transverse, rounded anteriorly. Metacoxae narrowly separated by intercoxal projection. Tibial spurs well developed. Tarsal claws simple. Abdomen with 5 visible ventrites. Sternite IX Y-shaped, stem short. Male genitalia without phallobase. with tegmen and free penis. Dorsal colouration usually metallic blue and shiny on elytra, rufous on pronotum.

Biology and Ecology

Almost nothing known about biology or ecology of Copobaenus. All known specimens were collected in mountain forests during the daytime.
