Oh my goodness! Unless you are a Tree of Life developer, you really shouldn't be here. This page is part of our beta test site, where we develop new features for the ToL, often messing up a thing or two in the process. Please visit the official version of this page, which is available here.

Type-species: Silurus callichthys Linnaeus, 1758.
This genus is under study by the page's author. There is evidence that more than one species occurs in South America. See the Complete Catalogue for authorships, synonyms, type-localities, and references.

Containing group: Callichthyidae

Diagnosis

The genus Callichthys is diagnosed by having the cranial articulation of the hyomandibula far from the prootic; the metapterygoid with a dorsal projection directed towards the hyomandibula; and the ridge for insertion of the levator operculi muscle near the anterodorsal border of the opercle. Further on these uniquely derived features, Callichthys possesses infraorbital bones covered with skin; does not have inner expansions on the second infraorbital; and does not posses transversal processes on the dorsal-fin proximal radials.

Distribution

The genus Callichthys is distributed in most freshwater drainages of South America, and is usually identified as C. callichthys. There is, however, both morphological and chromosomal evidence that this species is a "complex" of very similar species.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
